Write a homepage headline that actually says something

Most homepage headlines are vague slogans. A simple three-part formula for a headline visitors understand in seconds.

Your homepage headline has one job: tell a stranger what you do, for whom, and why they should care. Most headlines skip all three in favour of a slogan.

The vague-slogan trap

“Excellence in every detail.” “Your journey starts here.” These sound nice and say nothing. A visitor reading them still doesn’t know if you fix boilers or sell yoga mats.

A simple formula

Try this: [What you do] for [who it’s for], [the outcome they want].

  • “Garden design for small city spaces, planted to look good all year.”
  • “Bookkeeping for freelancers, so tax season is a non-event.”
  • “Same-day bike repairs in the city centre, back on the road by five.”

They’re not poetry, and that’s the point. Clarity beats cleverness every time.

Then add proof

Underneath, add one line that makes the headline believable: years in business, number of happy customers, a short review. Specific numbers are more convincing than adjectives.

Keep the button just as clear

Finish with one call to action that says what happens next: “Book a free quote”, not “Submit”. Small change, noticeable difference.
